Reeder

Posted on: March 29, 2010

reederIf you use Google Reader to follow your RSS feeds you may want to check out Reeder for the iPhone. It’s fast and has a very slick interface with both Instapaper and Read it Later integration.

I have also been using another RSS reader called Newsrack for a while which also works very well and has offline reading capability, but I am liking the minimal design of Reeder. It has just been updated to version 2!

Ragdoll Blaster was on of the most popular iPhone puzzle games although I didn’t get around to trying it out. Well, Ragdoll Blaster 2 was recently released and it’s a cracking physics puzzle game.

You fire ragdolls from cannons aiming to hit  the targets that are in varying locations with multiple hazards and contraptions in your path.

It has a cool ‘steampunk’ graphic style and nearly 140 levels of varying difficulty.

Highly recommended.

Pastebot

Posted on: March 8, 2010

Pastebot is a powerful clipboard utility that allows you to save many items to your clipboard, sort them into folders, copy them to your iPhone’s clipboard, edit images and a whole lot more.

The item that is currently in your iPhone’s clipboard, whether text or images, is instantly saved to Pastebot when you open the application.

Another excellent feature is that you can sync with your Mac over Wi-Fi using the additional free application once installed. You are then able to quickly copy and paste both images and text to and from your iPhone.

Here is a recently launched game that I have discovered by independent games company One Man Left.

Tilt to Live is a fast paced tilt-based action game in which you are required to stay alive for the longest amount of time possible.

It’s a simple game where you play as a white arrow and use your iPhone to tilt the arrow around the screen dodging the red dots and picking up various weapons to attack the enemy!

Easy to pick up and play and addictive!

  • App Advice – “The game is extremely addictive, so this review comes with not just caution, or a warning but a full scale alert. Alert: You will be addicted.”
  • Touch Arcade – “…it shows an attention to detail and knack for the inventive that escapes many games we see on the AppStore.”
  • PocketGamer – “A title like Tilt to Live is as much a warning as it is a call to action.”
  • Games Uncovered – “Tackling tough achievements earns you rewards; but playing Tilt to Live is a reward unto itself. We can’t put it down.”
  • AppModo – “Tilt to Live takes addictiveness to a whole new level! It is probably one of the best pick up and play games on the appstore!
  • The Tanooki – “Tilt to Live is a shining example of what arcade iPhone gameplay should be”
  • Space Miner is an excellent game, a well polished take on Asteroids with a mix of fast paced space combat and an RPG element. Blast the asteroids, collect ore to sell for ship and weapon upgrades.

Various missions crop up along the way as you unlock additional sectors in space.

A fun addictive game with plenty of variation, highly recommended.

Sometimes I prefer to read a lengthy article on my computer screen than my iPhone. Also, I frequently load up my iPhone with some longer content from the Web so that I can read it on my travels. The app I use for this is Read It Later.

I have my Read it Later account (free to register) synced up to my Google Reader account and using the iPhone app and bookmarklets (available for most web browsers) I can simply add articles and web content to read later from my iPhone or computer.

content is made available for offline viewing and can also be views in an ‘iPhone friendly’ text only format for heavy text articles. You can also sync and view PDF files.

I use the free version, the main advantage of the Pro version (paid) is a ‘Tap to Save’  bookmarklet that lets you add articles direct from links without the need to browse the site.

Here is a game that has kept me occupied while on holiday for the last week. Plants vs. Zombies a game by Popcap that takes the standard tower defense formula and  simplifies it.

Instead of a path to build towers along, you drop seeds in your yard which then grow in to plants that have various offensive or defensive capabilities. The yard is organized in a grid, and zombies move straight across, munching and occasionally jumping over anything that they come in contact with.

Addictive and the learning curve is set so that you don’t have to keep playing the same level over and over as the difficulty level is gradual.

Easy pick up and play and fun!

CanabaltA simple game that has real pick up and play value but will also have you saying – OK, just one more go! Once playing it’s quite hard to put it down.

The music is great and the gameplay is simple all you do is the tap the screen to make the character jump from platform to platform. There are falling bombs to avoid and you need to time the jumps to keep from dying in various ways.

It’s very fast paced and each game usually only lasts a minute or two unless you have a lucky run.

tweetie 2For those who like to twitter, tweet or follow like minded twitterers (if you don’t know what I’m talking about where have you been!) Tweetie 2 is simply the best Twitter app for the iPhone. It’s not free (check out Twitteriffic if you don’t want to spend the cash) but worth it for it’s elegant design and large feature-set.
